Squirrel Planting Peanuts

Kathy and I enjoyed watching a grey squirrel take advantage of a break in the rain to bury a peanut to eat later this winter.
A blob of dirt from the excavation site seemed to fascinate him to the point of tasting a nibble, then spitting out the mouthful.
I've no idea what that was all about.
