Mine Water Treatment

Around Wigan, which had a great many mineworkings back in the day, there are now a series of filtration ponds which clean the deep minewater before it enters the watercourses.
This one in Winstanley takes bright orange water (due to oxidised iron and other minerals), from the Summersales Colliery through three large reservoirs before it enters Smithy Brook as almost clear water.
Here, a chap from the Coal Authority (a Non-Departmental Public Body sponsored by the Department of Energy and Climate Change), is clearing the steps of debris to assist the smooth flow of water.
