SAXONS AND ROMANS

Today we did Saxons and Romans, and the 1950s. We visited Binchester Roman Fort, near Bishop Auckland, getting in just before the site closes for the winter. A really interesting place to visit - so much archaeology, helped by a really enthusiastic guide. Later we travelled just a few miles across the town to Escomb to the Saxon church - a real gem. I'll try to go back on a sunny day and get better photos, though - apologies for this being so dark. It's a tiny church but with lots to look at, and also every gravestone seemed to be a ladybird breeding colony!

Between the two visits we found a 1950s themed tea shop where we had such a delicious savoury cream tea, with cheese scones, cream cheese, cheese and pickle. Definitely one to visit again! Only tomorrow morning left now before Daughter #2 has to go home. :-(
