Eye Opening

And powerful.  I love being a mile from a big university. There is a series of free films being shown. They are all made by independent film makers in as documentaries.  Tonight's was called  "And So I Stayed"..  It was filmed in New York, upstate. It was about women who had been abused by their partners and retaliated in self-defense, killing the partner who had been abusing them for years. Many had been given 15 years to life as no self-defense law was in place.  It centered around one woman's struggle to pass that law and her success in doing so and the freedom that was granted to two women because of it.

Heartbreaking.  The films are followed by discussion with faculty of the college who are actively involved in the social justice platforms that try to right the wrongs and it's an effort to get students involved in these causes as well. Interesting to note that they offer a "Minor" in Social Justice.
