VIRGINIA CREEPER

VIRGINIA CREEPER (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) is a common "vine" around the U.S. east of the Mississloppy River.  Although it is a member of the grape family (F-Vitaceae) it bears no edible grapes. And it turns a beautiful red color in the fall.

However, it does produce berries which are poisonous and should not be eaten as they contain high concentrations of oxalic acid. This is especially true for those suffering from recurring kidney stones. Such individuals are counseled to avoid all oxalic acid containing foods.

For those of you concerned, here are some foods high in oxalic acid.

Foods high in oxalate (greater than 50 mg per serving) include:
Beet greens
Rhubarb
Spinach
Beets
Swiss chard
Endive
Cocoa powder
Sweet potatoes
Peanuts
Turnip greens
Star fruit

Best in Large.
