Vicars Woollen Mill

Scottish immigrant John Vicars established a successful woollen manufacturing business and in 1894 his sons built a new mill on a site which is now the Marrickville Metro shopping centre. The woollen mill continued to operate until the late 1970s.

While external walls have been preserved, the section in the photo has been left empty and unused. The windows are glassless and the building roofless, open to the sky. The word VICARS remains intact but by now partially covered by the growth of the fig tree.
