The 'Nieuwe Veenmolen', 's-Gravenhage

'Veenmolen' = 'VAIN-molen'
'Veen' or 'ven' is very closely connected with the English 'fen', so a kind of swampy area.
The other name of this windmill is 'Boschmolen', with 'bosch' sounding simply like 'bos', without the 'sh' sound ('bosch' is the old spelling), and actually meaning 'bush', or, very often, meaning 'woods' or 'wooded area' or 'forest'.
's-Gravenhage' = just join the 's' to the rest, so 'sGravenhage'.
'Hage' = 'Hah-guh' = means 'hedge'
'Graven' = among other things, 'counts' - plural (as in Dracula)
's-Gravenhage' = the hedge of the count
We also call this town by the simpler name of 'Den Haag' = '(of) The Hedge'.
It has an English name, too! -- The Hague, the seat of government of the NL.

This windmill was built in 1654.  It's still the original mill, despite having undergone a few renovations through the centuries.  There's a restaurant right next to it.  Its value has declined, though, because of all the tall office buildings that have risen nearby, as well as the railroad running right behind it.  You'd have thought an important city like The Hague would at least take the trouble to maintain the real estate value, and historical value also, of its mills.

I've decided on a kind of special windmill photography project, which I'll call the Hans Brinker Project, which will include photos of the mills in all the Dutch cities mentioned in the book, plus a few other chosen spots.  The Hague is one of those cities (although I will not include Loosduinen because that was a separate area at the time).

Sunny weather.  This is the windmill I wanted to shoot last Thursday.  There's another windmill along the same road, about 2.5-3 km. in the opposite direction.  Will save that for another sunny day.

Back home, we finally chose our tiles.  Actually AW's choice, and I think it's a pretty one.  Will shoot the 'finished product' when it's done.  In the evening, drove AW to his Monday live bridge session and picked him up.  While he was out, some housekeeping and gaming.  I should actually shoot a section of my game one of these days, when it's grey outside.  I do hope for a handful more of sunny days before my BLIP anniversary next week, and it might be too much to ask, but I do hope for a really good day on the anniversary itself.  There's a special mill I'd like to present for that day.
