Thank You For the Days ..

Both Sides ...

of  the remains of Kelso Abbey today. The main is a rather unrealistic image taken with the wide angle lens on my phone - it spreads the walls and makes the aspect look much more open than it is. Maybe it could be described as spacious and thus fit the theme for Wide Angle Wednesday (thanks to Bob, the host)?

The extra is the view from the Memorial Gardens, on the other side of the building. As Remembrance Day approaches, the Kelso Ladies Poppy Group have been busy knitting, crocheting, felting, sewing. I've no idea how many poppies they have made. This year's theme pays special attention to all the animals that have perished in war - horses and dogs spring to mind, but there is a special mention here of a racing pigeon with the wonderful name 'White Vision'.

In October 1943 a Catalina Flying Boat ditched off the Western Isles of Scotland. The radio was not working, so a message was attached to White Vision and she flew 60 miles through a storm to Sullom Voe in Shetland. A search party rescued the crew, who had spent 18 hours in the water. White Vision was awarded the Dickin Medal for actions of gallantry or devotion during the Second World War and subsequent conflicts.

If you look at the horse's saddle, you'll see a couple of pigeons perched there.
