South Lodge

Today I offer the South Lodge of Ballindalloch Castle in contrast the the austerity of Ardclach. The lodge, a Scots Baronial fantasy was built in 1850 to a design by Mckenzie and Matthews is situated at the east end of the Old Bridge of Avon which used to carry the A93 over the River Avon. Today the location was stunning viewed from the new road bridge (See extra) The fairytale appearance of the lodge was enhanced by the glowing colours of the surrounding trees. The old bridge was built in 1800-1, it consists of one main arch and a smaller flood arch. The incorporation of the flood arch probably helped the bridge to survive the Muckle Spate of August 1829 - a plaque on the bridge marks the alarmingly high level the floods reached then.
