John O'Gaunt's Reservoir

On a rather grey morning we went for a walk around John O'Gaunt's reservoir.
It takes name from its proximity to the ruins of John O'Gaunt's castle which was once a royal hunting lodge.
This is the smaller of what was once two reservoirs.
The main reservoir, known as Lower Beaver Dyke Reservoir, was constructed in 1890. In 2008 the reservoir's owner, Yorkshire Water, decided that it was no longer economic to maintain and it was decommissioned between 2013 and 2015 by breaching its dam and channelling a stream in the bed of the former reservoir.
The upper reservoir in this image is still filled with water and is a popular spot for fly fishing and bird watching.
