Remembrance on Dartmoor

Today we resumed social walking with our rambling club, the first time since March 2020. It was lovely to see everyone again.  We met at Hound Tor  on a marvellous sunny day to do our usual remembrance walk to the RAF memorial on Hameldown Hill, which commemorates the four aircrew who lost their lives on the evening of Friday 21 March 1941 when an RAF Hampden bomber crashed at this spot on Dartmoor.
After the silence at 11am we walked on over the moor and down to Widecombe for lunch. The weather was amazing, so different from previous years. A few of us are on the graveyard side of seventy so it was quite a tough and strenuous nine miles by the time we had climbed up Bonehill and over the moor to the start. In the previous day’s  Times, Widecombe was named one of the prettiest villages in England.
