The Highwayman Inn

There was no military firing on Dartmoor today so I decided to have a walk on the north moor. I parked at the village of Sourton, on the road to Okehampton. The village has long been known for it's lovely church, dedicated to St Thomas a Becket and for the Highwayman Inn shown here. The Inn is reputed to be one of the most unusual in the country, and as can be seen from the photograph, it has recently had a fresh lick of paint. From the church a steep path climbs up onto the the moor, The rugged Sourton Tors are some of the most dramatic on Dartmoor. On the way up to the tors you pass the remains of an ice works, which unfortunately was never a great success. Hopefully, the re-opening of the Exeter to Okehampton railway line this weekend to regular passenger services will prove to be a greater success. Campaigners hope that it will also lead eventually to the line between Plymouth and Okehampton also being re-opened.
