NZ Autumn 2024

Picture in picture

While we were going through the process of New Zealand Residency and unsure if we would be successful we bought the picture of Nelson Lighthouse, its number 12 of 100 prints, as it would be a reminder if we had to return to the UK.
The picture is from the seaward side and looks back across the Boulder Bank and Nelson Haven to the shoreline with Port Nelsons crane and the tall white cement silo and the hills behind.
The lighthouse was built Bath in the UK from cast iron panels and assembled in Nelson and just the second permanent lighthouse in NZ. It was constructed in 1861 and first lit in 1862 and stands 18.3 metres high.
Families of the lighthouse keepers used to live out on the Boulder Bank but sadly those buildings exist no more.
The link below is a short blog from the daughter of one such Nelson lighthouse keeper.
