Mother Wolf Spider

While I was digging the garden I saw this wolf spider with her egg sac. Wolf spiders carry their egg sacs about with them. Their size (about 7mm) and their colouring make them difficult to see, but the white nursery always gives them away.

In the first photo the spider is guarding her egg sac in a small hole below her body. The other shows her clutching it with her hind legs to make off with it.

Her responsibility continues after the spiderlings hatch. She carries them on her back, which makes her look very strange indeed. I’d love to get a photo of that.

Edit:  I did shortly after!
