Budding buddleias

Our buddleias are just starting to bud. According to my trusty guide Dr Google, Linnaeus named the genus ‘Buddleja’ to honour the Rev Adam Buddle (1662 – 1715), an English vicar and botanist. There are about 140 species of buddleia. The flowers come in a variety of colours - mauve, purple, burgundy, pink, white, yellow – and may be cone shaped or round. They have a delicious perfume and butterflies love them, hence their common name of butterfly bush.

I specially like this little connection. In England there are four National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens buddleia collections. One of them is in the Devon village of East Knowstone, which happens to be 15 miles from the village where I grew up.
