Now that's what you call a big model...

This is the Darlington Brick Train Sculpture which was created by David Mach in 1997. It celebrates Darlington's rich railway heritage. 

It is based on the Mallard (an LNER Class A4 steam train) that set the UK rail speed record of 126mph in 1938. The carved smoke is recreating the effect as if it was exiting a tunnel.

The sculpture is hollow and some of the bricks have been designed to allow bats to get inside to roost.
