The Hi Hi

This man is Dave Hilley wearing the red and white of Third Lanark Football Club. He was transferred to Newcastle United in 1962 for £31,000, then a record fee paid to a Scottish club. Five years later, Third Lanark was defuct, and has remained so ever since. They once had crowds of 20,000 people, but by 1967 were playing in front of a few hundred souls. I’m reading a book  which attempts to explain all this. It seems they were mis-managed, probably to a criminal degree. There was no ‘going into administration’ in 1967. If you couldn’t pay your debts, you went belly-up.

Third’s home ground, Cathkin Park, on the south side of Glasgow exists to this day. The grandstand has gone, but the terraces with their stanchions remain. Youth football is played on the pitch. But it is an eerie reminder of what once was: The ghost of Cathkin Park. Their name, by the way, comes from the fact that the club was formed by the 3rd Lanark Rifles in 1872. They also had the best ever nickname: The Hi Hi !
