Creature in distress

Arriving home just as it was going dark I heard a distressed groan from the hillside above the house. Wondering if one of next doors cattle had got stuck in the fence I searched and came across the hunched form (I thought it was a sheep at first) of aA trying to pull up a deep rooted weed from beside an avocado tree!
