Cheese Press, Weaver's Cottage, Kilbarchan

A very large cheese press for such a small cottage. Our first visit to the Weaver's Cottage. It was built in 1723, the cheese press is dated 1770.

The cottage houses the last of 800 looms in this village. So interesting to watch a lady working away on a traditional old loom, weaving a tartan pattern. She also showed us threads just received from Johnstons of Elgin. With these she will be weaving a newly registered tartan on this old loom, for the new Bannockburn Centre which is due to open in 2014. Fascinating to watch her working away at speed.

I just wish that photography without flash was allowed inside Scottish National Trust Properties, particularly when there are such interesting demonstrations.
