The #LightUpTheNight ride, passing in front of Holyrood.

Whilst the purple lines on the Spokes map - mostly converted rail beds, though now with a few purpose-built off-road paths - are sometimes the nicest, most car-free, direct and relaxing routes between places, it really depends on the time of day, or the amount of light. I've made a point of trying all the exits from the various paths at least once so that I know where I'd be if I need to quickly leave such a path by the closest escape point. Whilst most of the converted railways are properly-surfaced and mostly-lit, some are still dark, or muddy, or overgrown, or any combination thereof, with puddles, broken streetlights and so on making them much less convenient, welcoming, or safe. If we had safe, segregated, on-road infrastructure for active travel there wouldn't be a need to choose between a car-free but isolated/dark/lonely path or a busy road.
