Market at 100

It was such a horrible wet day today I almost didn't bother going out.

However I wanted to see some events today that they were staging to celebrate 100 years of the market.  But things were very quiet due to the weather.   There was a short documentary film which was excellent. and a photographic exhibition - some of them featured in the Extra.

One of the attractions was the venue which is an architecural gem from 1877 at the heart of the market. It is called the Pipe Factory and in its prime it employed 500 people making around 14,000 clay pipes per day.  The popularity of the clay pipe had much declined when it closed its doors in the mid 1950s.
