St Lucy’s Day

When we lived and worked in Poland one of the highlights of the Christmas season was the Swedish Embassy’s celebration of Sankta Lucia. Before tucking in to a sumptuous Swedish buffet we were enthralled by the darkened banqueting hall and the light filling it from the crown of burning candles worn by an intrepid young Swedish woman.

No candled crowns in Cheltenham today but I did wonder what parishioners walking through this alley to get to the principal church in the town make of this striking graffiti.

This afternoon our six year old grandchild sang to a large open air audience as part of a Christmas Carol concert. We were lucky with the 12 degrees and they all sang really well.

The rapid spread of Omicron dominated the TV news this evening. One of the popular bistro owners on Portobello’s High Street was featured. His doubts about surviving as a business into the New Year made very difficult viewing.
