In Norway all supermarkets have these machines. They are a return scheme for plastic bottles and cans. Depending upon the size of the item, more money is returned.
You can opt to give the money to the Red Cross instead, where you also enter into a lottery to win up to 1000kr. I was delighted when I won 100kr back
