How many shades of grey?

This is a weird effect of light on a corner in the house. Curious, and today it reminds me of the skill needed by medical staff to diagnose symptoms (and I'm obviously thinking of MrJ here) that are vague, unable to be pinned down to 'this' or 'that', neither 'black' nor 'white', just varying shades of grey.
