Black Ice

As Friday is a public holiday in Finland we decided to spend the long weekend at my family's summer cottage at lake Saimaa. This is the first visit this spring and to my surprise there is still some ice covering the little isolated part of the lake. That was a bit of disappointment to me as I was planning to start the boat season as the weather forecast looks promising - sun and relatively warm.

The black layer of ice although about 5-8 centimeters thick is extremely weak. I actually went went swimming from the sauna - literally through the ice. Well, at least I dipped into the icy water.

Maybe I'll drive my boat through the ice tomorrow - we'll see...
