House Exteriors Decorated for Christmas

Decorating the outside of a house seems to have really taken off in recent years - some are excessively gaudy with all kinds of flashing coloured lights and whilst often looking rather imaginative I can't help but wonder at the expense and quite frankly, why? we just have a tree - indoors - which is decorated and has lights (they don't flash!).
