Christmas tree "au naturel"

It has been drizzly on and off all day. I went out briefly, twice, and got very wet each time. On the second occasion I photographed this rather fine tree near our home. I am not sure what species it is, or when, and how, it came to be planted on the edge of a  housing estate, built nearly forty years ago. 
Spent the day mostly  reading, and writing an email to my sister in Australia.
