Wednesday Walk

Decided to drive over to the coast, though we still weren't sure that it was a sensible decision given the steady drizzle on the way over. Parked at the NT carpark at the Dunwich Heath Coastguard Cottages & walked north along the beach to Dunwich, then back across the Heath. Amazingly, there was no rain, and by the time we got back to the carpark the skies had cleared, just as the sun began to drop towards the horizon. From the clifftop could see south to the nuclear power station at Sizewell, which had been hidden in mist when we first arrived. Unfortunately we couldn't wait for the sky to develop more colour as the car park shut at 16:00, but we were treated to a colourful sunset on the way home.

Dunwich itself had been a thriving mediaeval port, but has been gradually lost to the sea from the 14th century onwards so that only a small villlage remains. The main Blip shows the view across the Minsmere nature reserve to Sizewell., while the extras show the ruins of Greyfriars at Dunwich, the last headstone from the All Saints graveyard remaining on the cliff edge (the church and the other tombs having been lost), and the spectacular colours of silver birch & bracken as the path took us onto Dunwich Heath itself.
