Calton Hill #5 : Dugald Stewart Monument

This monument, modelled on Greek architecture with nine columns surrounding an urn was built in honour of Dugald Stewart, the Scottish philosopher (1753-1828) who held the seat of Moral Philosophy at Edinburgh University from 1786 until he died. Built to a design by celebrated architect William Playfair the structure was commissioned by the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1830 and completed in 1831. In my picture, the building behind the monument is Observatory House, shown properly in my blip 'Calton Hill #2'. CLICK HERE for #1, CLICK HERE for #2, CLICK HERE for #3 and CLICK HERE for #4.
