Vale dear Fitbit

My Fitbit has died. For the last five years it has counted my paces and my kilometres travelled every day. It has been a great motivator, especially in the time of Covid, when we walk because we need to exercise, not for the pleasure of the walk or the destination.

We all know that we are supposed to walk 10,000 paces every day. That target was programmed into my Fitbit. However there seems to be no scientific evidence for the figure. It comes from the trade name of a pedometer sold in 1965 by Yamasa Clock in Japan. The pedometer was called ‘Manpo-kei’, which means ’10,000 steps meter’. Apparently the magic figure just took off around the world.

Anyway, I will buy a new Fitbit.
