Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Meet the ancestors

First appearing over 3 billion years ago, stromatolites are the oldest known fossils. They were colonial structures built by photosynthesising blue-green algae, and were responsible for the creation of earth's oxygen atmosphere. These organisms thrived in warm aquatic environments, building reefs much as corals do today.
Who would have thought that their distant descendants would one day launch telescopes into space to look at the very origins of the Universe. The light that the telescope will detect set off on its journey  many billions of years before these fossils were formed.
No, I don't really understand this either!

Thank you so much for all your kind comments on my 11th year blip anniversary yesterday. Doesn’t time go quickly when you are enjoying yourself?
