New Year

How to make a mark,
a strike in the ground,
that signifies something of great gravitas
to mark the arrival of a New Year?

Is it a resolution,
a thought, or series of thoughts,
so profound that the simple arrival of a new day
brings with it a whole new world of possibilities?

Perhaps rather
the future, my future,
remains a series of building blocks
for me to put together
in an order that moves me forward.

True too
that my days ahead
will be all the better
for leaving some of the past
behind.

I gather my thoughts,
jumbled and loose,
into a semblance of order.
Each day is mine to create.
Give me strength to do so.
