‘Stockbridge Colonies Plaques’

One of a selection of plaques, depicting a variety of trades and occupations, on the gable end of different rows of Stockbridge ‘colony’ houses. (Others in extras)

The houses were built in the 1860s as ‘model housing’ to provide a more sanitary alternative to the often squalid accommodation that by many working people lived in at that time.

For more details of the houses at Stockbridge, as well as other similar contemporary ‘colony housing’ developments in other parts of Edinburgh, see https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/downloads/file/23354/colonies-conservation-area-character-appraisal
