Lizzie's baby

Lizzie our visiting blue tongue made a brief appearance today, with a baby!

Unusually for lizards, blue tongues give birth, after a pregnancy of 3 to 4 months. The babies are self sufficient almost at once and leave their mothers after three or four days. Lizzie might have had up to 15 young: I only saw one, but I don’t know if it was always the same one.

I had no hope of getting a shot of the baby. It seemed to be incredibly sensitive to movement and shot back under cover before I could get anywhere near it. Lizzie showed no interest in the baby at all, so the process of maternal separation was evidently well advanced.
