Seal Protection

If you look carefully at this photo, you'll see writing on the sand asking the public to stay away from a resting harbour seal (which can be seen in the top left of the photo, (also in extras).

The common (or harbour seal) can be distinguished from the grey seal by its smaller size and shorter head with a more concave forehead. Common seals have V-shaped nostrils. They are very variable in colour, from blonde to black, but generally grey with dark spots.

This notice was written by a member of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue who had arrived to monitor the seal and keep it safe from people and dogs. Apparently this seal would have been born during last summer. They often haul themselves up on the beach to rest and to digest their food.  We're more used to seeing the grey seal around here, especially at Blakeney Point and Horsey.

BDMLR is charitable organisation dedicated to the rescue and well being of all marine animals in distress around the UK.  It was good to know that they were monitoring this seal.  A and I watched it for a while and when we left it was heading off towards the sea.  We continued our walk and it was gone by the time we returned.
