Doubt-ful

We went over to Wells this afternoon for a stroll across the fields behind the cathedral towards Dulcote then around the Bishop’s Palace moat and back to the Cathedral.

The blip shows the sculpture Doubt, by Sir Antony Gormley, which is on display for 18 months in this niche on the North West tower.

It has certainly divided opinion amongst locals and visitors. At just over life size, it’s no Angel Of The North and I can’t say I find it particularly striking, attractive or harmonious but I guess that’s part of the point.

Gormley has been quoted as saying that he wanted to “ invoke the feeling of being isolated and exposed on this corner of a Gothic masterpiece”  and that “doubt is an important part of belief”.

It certainly adds to the interest of the West Front.
