The continuing saga of the Sun! The large spot is designated 1711 and, including the penumbra (surrounding semi-dark region), is considerably bigger than the Earth.
Although the sunspots appear dark they only do so in contrast to the surface of the Sun. If they could be removed from the Sun's vicinity they would shine as brightly as the full Moon. They are 'cool' areas linked with magnetic activity within the Sun itself.
