The Races

Southwell Racecourse is under a kilometre from us. A walk down Mill Lane. Over the old red brick bridge that rides across Carr Dyke. Swing a left by the horses and then over the larger concrete laid bridge that sits over the Greet River. Then, there in front of you, is the re-laid all weather Southwell Racecourse.

The sound of a racehorse running at speed is like nothing else. Times this by 10 or more and the thrill of crossing Carr Dyke bridge to the sound of forty hooves was incredible.

We walked on, around the golf course back 9, over the train line and into the beautiful village of Rolleston. Through the ancient graveyard and then on to probably more ancient still crop fields. A mile and a half later we arrive at the Bromley Arms for a drink by the quickly flowing River Trent. Flora had a roast cob dripping in gravy too!

The weather turns cooler and we drink up, returning via a mill footpath and then retracing our steps.

Now my dinner is ready.
