Kent coast

A trip to Whitstable and surrounding areas. This was an area called Western Esplanade in Herne Bay . It was originally called Hampton on Sea a tiny fishing hamlet in 1864 and was developed in 1879 by land agents. It was abandoned in 1916 and drowned by coastal erosion by 1921. It’s residents plight was championed by Edmund Reid who before retiring had headed the Metropolitan CID’s investigation into Jack the Ripper
