David MacBeth Moir

Detail from the David MacBeth Moir Building, Musselburgh.  David MacBeth Moir was a renowned physician and writer.  Born in1798 he was apprenticed at the age of 13 to a local doctor with whom he studied for 4 years whilst attending Edinburgh University.  He graduated in 1816, obtained the Diploma of Surgeon in 1817 and practised medicine in Musselburgh until his death in1851 despite offers of more lucrative positions in Edinburgh.  He was also a regular contributor to Blackwoods Magazine from its inception.  David MacBeth was an unassuming physician and talented poet highly regarded in both the medical and literary worlds.
