Pause

It’s not one
of the unwritten laws,
nor is it writ in stone,
but this must be
the just right moment to

pause

before deciding
what’s to be done
next.

I’d like to think that,
behind closed doors,
Big Dog has reached such a moment
and is, himself, deciding
(though others may decide it for him)
that now is just the right moment
to do what is right and just.

‘Every dog has his day,’
he could say
‘And I’ve had far more
than I deserve’.

He could let himself off the lead.
Run off down Downing Street.
Bite a few ankles along the way.
Give a shake of his shaggy mane.
Offer one final woof.
And piss on a lamppost.

Note: ‘In a bid to salvage his premiership
Boris Johnson is drawing up a list of officials
to offer resignations over Partygate.
Dubbed “Operation Save Big Dog”
by the prime minister himself, the blueprint
includes a drive to work out which heads should roll.’
