Wonky

There are a number of myths about the spire on the church in Chesterfield.  The best one is that there was a wedding taking place and the Church realised that the bride was a virgin.  Never having seen a virgin in Chesterfield before the Church twisted round to get a better look and got stuck in this position.  The myth then goes on to say that if ever another virgin gets married in the Church, it will right itself.

Actually, the real reason seems to be that the town lost lots of its skilled workers due to the bubonic plague in the fourteenth century and it was finished by workers who didn't have quite the same level of training and capability.  They used unseasoned wood and didn't put in any cross bracing, so when 50 tons of tiles was added it went wonky.  Gary reckons this is a little bit harsh on the workers.  "It's still standing, 650 years after they made it.  That sounds pretty skillful to me!" he said
