Battle memorial

A very dreary grey morning walk around Lewes with the spaniel followed by an afternoon of moving my son to his new place in Surrey. My image is a detail from the Battle of Lewes (think Second Barons War, Simon de Montforte, 1264 and all that) memorial. The memorial, in the form of a somewhat bizarre giant knight's helmet, was created by the sculptor Enzo Plazzotta on the 700th anniversary of the battle. I don't think its his best work, the rest of which is very fine, but the 'scenes' from the battle that circle the helm on a bronze chaplet are perhaps better than the piece as a whole. The scenes are, of course, somewhat imaginary. Although based on contemporary chronicles, even the location of the battlefield is disputed. You can see the whole work, and compare it with some of his other pieces here.
