Birch Cluster

Around here they're called Paper Birch (Betula papyrifora); it's a pioneer plant, often growing quickly in disturbed areas or those visited by fire. It grows fast and dies young. But they're beautiful.

If you're ever lost on the wet woods, bark peeled from this tree makes excellent tinder for starting a fire to keep warm.

The logs are attractive in the fireplace...but the log burns hot and fast. If you want the fire to last, oak or maple is the best choice.
