By the Dart

We had a day out today. We usually do so on this day as it was my mother’s birthday, and it’s a way of remembering her. We walked from Dartmouth to Little Dartmouth and back. It’s not far but it is a great walk, past St Petrox Church, and the castle, the coastguard cottages, and on to Little Dartmouth, and return via the coast path. Pictured is the church, perched above the mouth of the river, and next to the castle and more importantly, the castle tea rooms, where we always have a coffee, and tea on the way back. The path takes you by the graveyard, which is raised up, and I noticed an intriguing grave - William Tregarthen Douglass of Westminster- drowned at Dartmouth 10 August 1913. See Extra. I looked him up and found that among many other engineering achievements he was the resident engineer supervising the erection of the new and current Eddystone Lighthouse, and the dismantling and removal of the old one to Plymouth Hoe 1878-1882. He drowned when his sailing boat capsized off Start Point on 10 August 1913. He had been visiting his mother who lived in a house in Dartmouth that overlooks the river. It’s a grand old house.I’ll blip it next time I am there. The family grave is also in memory of his two sons, one killed in the First World War, and one in World War Two.
Bird of the day came in late - a bullfinch, triumphing over the stonechats.
In Dartmouth we had fish and chips, at Rockfish ( motto - tomorrow’s fish are still in the sea )  my mother’s favourite. In all the Rockfish toilets the Shipping Forecast  ( by Les Barker) read by Brian Perkins, plays on repeat -  ‘German Bight, French kiss, and Dover sole. Ginger Rogers and Finisterre,’ etc. Google it.
It was a good day.
It was also Holocaust Memorial Day, which was always something we commemorated at work, with a book list, or display. There are memorial gardens in Paignton and there would have been some sort of a ceremony today. Film of the week was the Book Thief. Thought it was brilliant. My Mother was called Ivy. Saw a lot of that en route - extra. Note  the vertical slates. Is that a Devon thing?
