It nearly worked.

Last "back-end" the hose managed to wriggle a shade too close to the funeral pyre (Chiminea). the result was a length of combined hole and weakness.

I happened to spot an ad for "self amalgamating tape" in one of those periodicals which replaced "Inovations".
On a, slightly later, trip around B&Q I saw some at about 1/2 the cost. Nothing ventured etc. What the hell, Give it a whirl.

Result -
It actually does self amalgamate quite well.
Unfortunately, because the instructions say stretch by ?% when applying it means it's relatively elastic, as can be seen above. I did rather hope to catch it at precisely the fracture nanosecond. HAH! Fat chance. I was rather taken, however, by the drop-on-a-stick well to the left.
It's NOT ice HONEST.
The hole is now about 2mtr shorter.
