Crumble pudding

. . . is one of our favourites. Having been invited by a friend for an aperitif later this afternoon, we decided to lunch out first and have an extremely lazy, indulgent and relaxing day. It's not too far a walk to the hotel on the hill, which has glorious views over the Firth of Clyde to Arran, though today it was a bit misty to see too far. The restaurant was busy and service was a bit on the slow side, but the food was delicious - squid tempura and a mixed girl of bream, red mullet, salmon and prawn. As we were in an indulgent mood, the pudding menu was summoned and there was really no contest - the fruit crumble won easily.

So, what's the point of all this preamble? Well, before setting out for lunch, we actually did a little work in the field this morning. This solitary rhubarb plant was struggling in a completely unsuitable position at the top of the rockery in the garden. Today it was transplanted to the new vegetable patch, becoming its first resident! Let's hope it enjoys greater freedom and a sunnier microclimate to reward us with fillings for many more crumbles to come!
