De-canalisation and re-naturalisation

In the good bad old times the little river Gersprenz was canalised. They may have had good reasons for that, but nowadays the general opinion is away from straight rivers and back to meandering broad rivers.
Around 2000 a tunnel was built around Höchst im Odenwald and as a compensation the Gersprenz was re-naturalised. Of course not in our village, at that time too conservative, but at least in the neighbouring one.
So, parts were rebuilt to slow the flow velocity and to offer even (though very little) room to flood the borders. This worked at least partially, and influenced the flora and fauna. Beavers returned, as did nutrias and kingfishers, to name just a couple.
In order to further slow the river down the responsible organisation has now put a number of mounds at strategic places. It will also cause the river to create new turns. A bit of land lost here and there. But in return we will have more nature.
