American Dagger Moth Caterpillar

American Dagger Moth (Acronicta americana)....not really sure why it's called that but speculating that it may have to do with the toxic nature of the bristles on the caterpillar which may feel like one has been stabbed after touching one.

As a general "Rule of Thumb" any critter that advertises itself is likely to cause you some problems and you're best to leave it alone. This particular caterpillar cannot be mistaken for anything else and those black "hairs" on its back can inject a powerful toxin into your skin.

They are advertised as "poisonous" and serious harm is implied if you touch one.  I think that depends on whether or not you are particularly sensitive to their toxin, which may cause more than the painful, itchy rash one would expect from playing with one of these.  best to just leave it alone.

The adult is a big moth being 2-2.5 inches long. It's quite unmistakable. Check out the adult photos:  american dagger moth adult photos

The adults are harmless to humans.

It's long and thin and maybe fits the qualifications for a Wide Wednesday offering.  Best in Large.
