These rusty pulls are the old style doorbells that can be found on most Edinburgh tenements. Although 99% of them have been superseded by secure intercom entry systems (about 90% of which are broken) they remain in situ and look quite attractive. Rather than being pushed, the handle would be grasped and pulled which would ring the bell in the appropriate flat In the posher areas of the New Town there are probably still some working examples.
